Timmy, my oldest son, just started kindergarten this past Monday. He was so excited. Jumping up and down with this huge smile saying, "I get to go to school today!" He's growing up. Although I know it's going to be a long, hard road, I look forward to the next 18 years.
I say 18 years because Timmy has a brother, Brock, who is just 19 month younger. Over the next 18 years, I plan to disciple my sons and raise them, strategically, to be masculine, godly men. I plan to give them:
1) A Vision for Manhood - a vision of who and what he is.
2) A Code of Conduct - a code to define how he is to live.
3) A Transcendent Cause - a cause to live for.
I know, your saying, "sure you will! Where's the bridge you have for sale?" There is no bridge, just a plan. A plan fill with lots of prayer, bible study, time and patience. A plan that begins with the end in mind. A plan that, by no means, will I be executing alone.
As fathers, our goal should be to build our children, especially our sons, to stand firm in the faith and to serve Christ. Again, especially our sons, because one day, they will be adults, married with children. They will be expected to be the spiritual leaders of their families. They will also be the future leaders of our churches, our communities, and our country. If we do not build them, the world will. We have to call them up to be authentic men, or the world will call them down to be passive and forever boys.
Over the next seven weeks, I will be facilitating a course at my church called, Raising a Modern-Day Knight, based on the book of the same title by Robert Lewis. I will be journaling some of that experience here, along with other articles where I will expand on this plan for raising my sons.
